After a long fun day on the lake this was a great place for dinner with the family. We had to wait to be seated, but once we were at a table our server, Kelly, came right over and for our drink orders. After coming in for a burger special it was funny to see that no one in our party ordered a burger. I got the Country Fried Steak, grandma had the ribs, dad the Steak sandwich, and mom got wings and peel and eat shrimp. All of it was great! Kelly checked on us throughout our stay, and kept our drinks full. The only negative we had was that sitting at our table before the sun went behind the mountain it was wining straight into some of our eyes. I would recommend some sun shades for the windows.

Upon arriving the hostess was sitting in the back room and then when she saw me came running up to the stand : / Other than that the service was great, don't remember my servers name but he was a bigger guy with black hair and a beard. He was extremely attentive. My drink of Jameson was poured generously. The wings were perfect and my girlfriends salad was also perfect for the price of 5$

I have come here once a year for ten years. Best burgers in 50 miles. The bartender even remembers my name. Cool.

Wonderful cabin restaurant. Good waiter. Prices reasonable. Steaks were fabulous. Would definitely recommend.

I agree with basically everyone else. Food is meh. I thought service was OK, our guy was pleasant, but the place has a dingy "please clean me" vibe that is pretty gross and watching them bus tables I could absolutely see why. The food is obviously mostly frozen, pre-packaged stuff. It's not the worst I have seen but I probably wouldn't go here again.

We got here after trying to find a place to eat at 8 pm at Deep Creek. The servers were friendly and busy. But not very attentive. They tried. The ceasar salad was passable. The nachos were terrible. The cheese poppers were OK. It was a great place to stop when no one else had space.

The food was good with large portions. The place was lodge like, very large, and had a nice view.

Not very good. Lettuce on burger was at least a couple days past usable. Everything else was basically mediocre.

The food and value were excellent. I had the Surf n Turf and it was delicious, especially for the price. Would definitely recommend just based on food. The service however was a 2 star at best. We were continually left waiting long stretches of time for our waitress, and ran out of drinks frequently. She seemed so unattententive and acted like she had better things to do. Until they get better staff, I'm never coming back. She was no Kelly, that's for sure.

My family and I have gone to this restaurant often and have never had a bad meal. The hot Italian sandwich is wonderful as well as Steak on a Lake and chicken sliders. The crab stuffed portabello is very good. Normally, I;d give it 4 stars but yesterday, the service was not good. We ate outside - the place was not busy. The server came right away - a good start. But when she brought our food and I asked for utensils and napkins, she questioned if we needed utensils! Now, sandwiches and french fries are usually eaten without utensils but she brought little cups of mayo for the sandwiches and said she's seen people use french fries to spread mayo! Wow! I guess she didn't want to wash them! She also didn't ask if we needed ketchup, salt, pepper or other condiments. I went and got them myself from a nearby table. We will go back because it's convenient and the food is good but I hope the service is better next time!

Delicious food!!! I had crab Mac n cheese and it was Kraft, which was a bit upsetting. Reasonably priced.great after a day at Fun Zone.

Generally we have a good experience here. The service can be slow, hit or miss on that. For the price the food is pretty good and usually comes out fast. Fine for kids. The outdoor seating is great on nice days overlooking the lake.

I will inevitably end up coming back here because it's practically the only sports bar in town. But really, it just isn't very good. We came here a few weekends back to watch a Maryland game while we were at the lake and ordered an assortment of bar food. The service was not great, and the food ranged from pretty good to legitimately bad. I will say the buffalo wings were tasty and probably above average. We ordered a few other flavors, including the sriracha ranch - sounds good right? I love Sriracha and I like ranch. The were probably the worst wings I have had in my life. They came out with a thin, almost tasteless ranch-based white sauce on them. They genuinely looked like they had been dipped in milk. You could barely taste the Sriracha (or anything) at all. Probably the first time in my life I've left wings on the table for a reason other than being too full to finish them. We also had nachos, which rather than having melted cheese over them, had that cheap stadium-style "cheese" sauce poured over them. The bottom line is this is a perfectly serviceable place to grab some beers and watch a game, especially given the lack of options, but if you're going to get food, either go somewhere else or stick to the buffalo wings.

Looks good but don't bother. Stopped in for lunch and was really disappointed that such a nice looking place would have such poor quality food. Service is good but if no ones watching the quality coming out of the kitchen it doesn't matter. We ordered side salads and we both had to pick out a lot of wilted dark greens. Ended up not eating. My wife ordered a burger medium with grilled onions and no bun. It came out burnt well done on a bun with raw onions melted under the cheese. Must have teenagers running the kitchen who could careless about food quality. Very disappointing. My advice - dont bother going...

Been vacationing in the DCL area for about 10 years now and this place is always on our must stop map. Food is decent & beer selection is good. Atmosphere is what makes this place so much fun. a good mix of locals and of tourists and everyone getting along, drinking & having fun. Great way to kill a Saturday evening!

Ordered surf and turf. Steak was over cooked, they gave me a new one, this time it was still moo'ing. Waiter was cool, nice atmosphere. Veggies were over cooked, stick with basic bar food and you should be okay. Best part is, they alow dogs on the deck & the Beer is cold. Enjoy your stay at the lake.

You want fine dining go to the Pine Lodge next door. This is a bar, people! It serves bar food! The burgers were great! Atmosphere is (suprize!) a BAR! There's music, drinks and food. Considering how bland Smileys is and how pricey Pine Lodge is. This is one of the go to stops after a day full of hiking with the wife.

Overall experience was okay. Sat on the deck outdoor at a big table which was really nice because we didn't have to wait to be seated or be seated at separate tables with our group of 8. The grilled shrimp, crab cakes and onion rings were all great, but some of the others in our group did not care for their meals. While the food is not too pricey, the portions are not very big either which may leave some unsatisfied. We went on a Sunday night so it wasn't too crazy but the people that were there were ... interesting folk. We could definitely tell the locals from the tourists...some had set up a beer pong table right beside our group during our meal....so that was entertaining and a little ghetto. The service was pretty good and we didn't have to wait that long for our food. Their alcohol prices seemed pretty decent/average.

Went here for lunch, which was better than regular bar food. The pink dragon cocktail is amazing, and their desserts are great too. I know from friends that this is the only place in town where you will find the visiting 20-somethings when it comes to night life. Black Bear is a favorite among our friends during the winter ski season.

Monday afternoon in August. It's raining outside, so the dining room is hopping, but not capacity. It took more than 15 minutes to even get acknowledged. Drinks (ice tea!) came in a timely manner but a chicken Caesar salad and chicken sliders took over 20 minutes to arrive. No ketchup on the table and the waitress disappeared before we noticed and also noticed that the sliders had no mayo on them which I specifically asked for. Chicken Caesar salad was good, but it was all iceberg lettuce. The sweet tea was sickenly sweet. Twenty minutes after food delivery waitress returned to ask how everything was. Overall a very disappointing meal.

We really like this place, though I can see its limitations. We've been there twice for lunch while on vacation. It's become our go-to place when driving to Deep Creek Lake. Lunch bar food is not exceptional, but better than average with a touch of creativity here and there and a decent beer selection.

While on a getaway to Deep Creek, I stopped in the Black Bear one night when one of the bars was having live music and the other bar was empty. I grabbed a drink and a quick bite, but after both I decided to not stay. The food was fine, very pricey drink was watered down. I wish I looked at the reviews before I stopped there. Stay away, there are better places in the area.

Alright... minimally, it was FANTASTIC people-watching!!! LOL I had a good time; I would go back PROS: this is the only real "night life" for the younger (21-mid 30's crowd) @ the Lake for the tourist-types. Really great People watching. They get live bands Drinks weren't very pricey CONS: if you're from Pittsburgh, its kind-of-a laughable experience. The best part of the evening there was watching the old creepy poon-hounds trying to hit on the old creepy cougars that wondered into this joint! LOL They drank, they danced, they were marry.... LOL. Otherwise, this place is going to be as fun as you make it. It wasn't bad, but you're Stranger-Danger experience awaits! LOL Mostly tourists, many locals.

Went there with our families for lunch. The service was awful. Ninety minutes to bring 7 lunches and the place was not full. After we complained to the manager they comp'ed our drinks, so it wasn't all bad. Probably a fun place to go at night for drinks, but don't go for lunch.

This place used to be so great! I don't know what happened, I think they are under new management since last time I was there, but it's gone completely downhill. Such a shame.

This bar was ok. Not much for beer selection. The only reason we went here was because they have 16 tvs. Happy they put on the caps game in an area that only has pittsburgh channels.

I would affectionately call Black Bear a great dive. There is nothing fancy but it has great character, good bar food and decent prices. The Chesapeake Bay wings are tasty and they have a good steak salad (which they'll add fries to if you ask). The deck is great people watching and usually has good entertainment on Saturdays in the summer. It is a great mix of locals and tourists. It's been my experience that everyone is nice if you are. I haven't been to the dance club next door but the crowd milling around waiting for it open look like a dressed up version of the crowd at the bar. Black Bear reminds you that, despite the big houses and fast boats, McHenry is still a small town.

I came here a couple times when I would go snowboarding at Wisp. It was the only place close by the resort to hang out. I've only been at night. There's two rooms- one for playing pool, a bar, some arcade games and food. The other had a dance floor, a band and a bar. This room would get pretty crowded. Drinks weren't too expensive and they have karaoke on Thursday nights. I have not been on karaoke night, but would like to check it out next time and will let you know. Overall it's a fun place to just kick it.

I went here for a steak after a long outdoors day. It was pretty disappointing, but it was my only choice after ruling out the overpriced $40 steak at the Pine Lodge steakhouse next door. Instead, I opted for a $20 steak here. I guess I got what I paid for. The steak was ok, similar to what you'd get at a chain like Sizzler or Ponderosa. The service was a bit laughable though. I asked for Ranch on my salad, she brought out vinaigrette. When I asked, she said "I thought you said vinaigrette?" I reminded her we'd discussed how the ranch was house-made. "Oh yeah," she said. Then she brought out my steak with mashed potatoes. I reminded her I'd asked for baked potato. She went back to ask the chef ... they were out of baked, so they just substituted. Oh well. Then I had a crab cake coming. But it didn't show up. The chef had dropped it on the floor. "Never mind," I said. All in all, I wasn't too disappointed, because it's not the kind of place to have high expectations about. But it would have been nice to see some competence too.

The short and sweet of it: this place is alright for an afternoon out with friends- not anything special. When we walked in, we waited at an empty hostess stand for a bit before someone came out of the night club side to seat us in the bar area. First impression: a little dark and dingy, totally the local sports bar (beer signs EVERYWHERE!). Our waitress and drinks were excellent (try the Black Bear Lemonade!), but the food was average at best. Appetizers came out so-so, but the ribs that I ordered were definitely not "fall off the bone," and should've been cooked a little longer. Everyone else at my table was less than impressed with their food as well. I could see myself returning if I had to watch a football game and wanted to grab a beer somewhere, but if I'm interested in eating something yummy, I'll likely head elsewhere.

We were looking for a late night dinner before we checked into our cabin in Deep Creek and we came across this place. This is definitely the local watering hole. We were quite a sight in an all-girl group. I ordered a Steak salad mostly because it was the only thing that wasn't fried. The drinks were good and also cheap. Not a bad place for food & drinks. Not ideal if you are looking for a fancy place.

Extremely slow service and just OK food. Great live music though. The mixed drinks we ordered weren't good, better off ordering a beer.

The place was inviting but a bit crowded and loud. I didn't find anything that set it out from the usual hole in the wall other than it's nice to have a place like this that people can go to with a bar on one side and the club on the other. Be careful leaving the place! State Troopers are at the ready!!

Wings were great, The Burgers were also quite good. My issue with the place was the bartender. I'm in the service industry, and have never seen a bartender act so unpleasant in my life. He should have been happy to have guests in the restaurant with such crappy weather. He was an older, short, bearded man working behind the bar on Tuesday night. I don't expect much from service, but at least act like you want us there. It was quite uncomfortable. He probably felt like a jerk when we tipped him 40%. (that's just the kind of people we are).

Heard good things about Black Bears burgers. Didn't have to wait to be seated...but had to wait close to 15 min for the wait staff to address our party of 5 and close to 10 more min to get a drink. Two people in our party ordered Reds Apple Ale (bottles) and were served glasses of wine...I'm serious. Red wine. When ordering burgers we were informed that they are frozen and all cooked to the same temp so people couldn't order medium well burgers -they were all well done. My boyfriend was never given his side but it was still on our bill! Needless to say the next night we decided to just get pizza delivered as to avoid the awful service!
